Kentwood is found in the Kent County area of Michigan. According to the 2000 census, there is a population of about 45,000. That number indicates that Kentwood is the second most populated suburb of Grand Rapids. The town got its name from Kent County. Kent County got its name from James Kent. There are 21 square miles covered by Kentwood. Wyoming lies to the west, the Cascade Township is on the east, Gaines Township to the south, and Grand Rapids is on the north side.

Kentwood is proud of its history and strives to ensure it is never lost or forgotten. In fact, they’ve created the Kentwood Historic Preservation Commission (KHPC) for just that. It consists of seven people who are appointed by the City Commission who aim to preserve the community’s history. Residents of Kentwood are welcome to apply if interested in serving on the KHPC.

33 percent of the families living in Kentwood have children under the age of 18 living in the house, and almost half of the households were married couples living together. There are plenty of family-friendly activities in the Kentwood area. Many families enjoy the fact that Grand Rapids is nearby, making it easy to get to the vast amount of attractions found there. The Children’s Museum, John Ball Zoo, and the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculptures are just a few of the attractions that draw families to the area. There are also many outdoor recreation activities to take part in.

The Kentwood Parks & Recreation Department offer an array of activities for everyone ranging from kids, to teens, to adults, to senior citizens, and even those that cater to people with disabilities. They also offer new, fitness programs to help residents get up, get going, and stay active. If you want to spend the day at the park or have a family/group event, you can even rent park shelters for a nominal fee.
